Students will continue watching Hidden Figures and after the end of the movie, students will discuss the positive and negative implications of technology taking over roles humans once held? What role did gender play in STEM fields in the 1950's and ‘60s? How much have those roles changed today?

Lesson: Make up day and Hidden Figures

In this zoom meeting students will complete their missing assignments, if kids are up to date on their missing assignments, students will watch Hidden Figures. Based on an inspiring true story of African American women at NASA in the 1950's and '60s helps shine a light on the need for humans even as technology continues to automate.

 

Things for students to think about is the positive and negative implications of technology taking over roles humans once held. What role did gender play in Stem fields in the 1950’s and ‘60s? How much have those roles changed today? 

The movie is rated PG, students are required to have parental/guardian permission for student to view the PG movie. If you do not permit your child to view the movie student will be placed in a breakout room and participate in a Kahoot!! math review. If you give permission for student to watch movie, please sign the Permission slip on in a google form.

Objective: Student will be able distinguish between behaviors that are safe versus harmful and develop health lifestyles.


Essential Question: Identify different ways that can keep your risk of contracting a deadly disease low.

Lesson:  Infectious Diseases

In this zoom meeting, the lesson will start with a video covering infectious diseases that have plagued humans over the course over history and how many diseases thanks to modern medicine helped eradicate some of these diseases that use to plague human civilization.

Students and I will discuss the importance of public health policies, resources and services that help keep these diseases from running rampant among our population. Students will then complete a google form that is related to the topic and students will answer comprehension questions related to the text.

Essential Question: Identify the glands that are part of the endocrine system.

 

Lesson: Endocrine System Escape Room

 

Zoom meeting will begin with brief overview of the endocrine system and how it important it is to the human body. Learning about the different glands and the hormones they secrete and how they impact our bodies.

 

Students will then participate in an escape room in which they will have to use evidence from text and videos provided, to answer questions relating to the endocrine system. With every question correct they will be a step closer to escape, but when they get a question wrong it would be set back.

Zoom meeting will start discussing the name of the planets and what is in the center of the solar system.


Then I will review the basic operations of the gizmo with students in the solar system gizmo. Students and I will then work on Activity (Planetary Orbits) working together to measure how to long it takes each planet to orbit around the Sun, while discussing why planets take longer than others.

Teacher will start zoom meeting reviewing the steps of the scientific method with a PowerPoint.

Students and I will then have discussion why it’s important to repeat experiments. We will discuss how it is important to collect data, draw conclusions and use evidence to support our conclusions.

Students will then participate in  student tutorial that goes into greater detail of the importance of having testable observations that is supported by evidence.

Once student is finished with tutorial, student will be able write name on certificate and will be able to download it. Student must submit certificate through the educational network.

In the beginning of the zoom meeting, I will demonstrate the basic operations of the gizmo.

In the start of the zoom meeting , i will go over the six basic forms of energy ( light, sound, heat (thermal) mechanical, electrical and chemical energy). We will then have discussion where and when we can see these energies in everyday life. Students will then do a student tutorial ( Energy Scavenger Hunt at an Amusement Park) from cpalms.

Essential Question: Identify what plants need in order to make food?

Teacher will introduce the article A Plant Puzzle, and explain how every organism needs energy to survive/grow. 

Step 2:

Teacher and students will read through the article and identify the three needs that a plant has in order to make it's own food.

Step 3:

Students will complete comprehension questions 1 through 10 on their own.

Objective: Students will be able to understand how plants convert the sun's energy to make their own food through the process of photosynthesis and recognize that animals must eat plants or other animals to obtain energy.

Essential Question: Identify and explain how energy from the sun get transferred through a food chain?

Classwork:

Step 1:

Students will start off with the teacher, reviewing prior knowledge in the interactive student tutorial Where Does Your Energy Come From?  In the beginning of the tutorial it will identify how producers (ex. plants) and consumers ( animals) obtain their energy.

Step 2:

Students with the teacher's guidance will correctly identify how energy flows from organism to another in an energy path .

Step 3:

Students will then complete the final practice provided by the tutorial on their own.

Objective: Student will be able to recognize that producers use energy from the sun to make their food and consumers eat plants or other animals for their food.

Essential Question:  Identify the impact that the removal of a food source can have on animals.

Classwork:

Step 1:

Students will log on to their explore learning accounts. Username and password have been provided through a class dojo message. Teacher will demonstrate the basic operations of the gizmo.

Step 2: 

Students and teacher will work together manipulating the populations of the deer, bears, trees and mushroom. Together we will observe how each organism's population or lack thereof could impact the population of the other organism.  We will also be identifying the consumers and producers in the ecosystem.

Step 3: 

Complete activity b worksheet on your own.

In this article Natural Selection, it will be discussing how animals need to adapt to a changing environment to survive. Animals that do adapt will survive, create offspring(babies). Animals that do not adapt as quickly, will die off and possibly go extinct.
